Student Employee Book Loan Program
General Information:
- The Book Loan Program was developed to benefit the full-time student employee (full time employees are not eligible) and to assist Hospitality Services during difficult staffing periods over peak times. The student works one full semester and after meeting the required intensive criteria of the program agreement, Hospitality Services will then pay for the student’s textbooks for the following semester. The books are only on loan and must be returned by the last day of finals of the semester.
- Book Loan Program covers only textbooks. This program covers no packets, kits, calculators, workbooks or other materials. All books will be supplied through the Penn State Bookstore at the University Park campus. We will not reimburse anyone for purchases made elsewhere. A notice of the specific times and dates when employees should obtain their books will be distributed to each participant.
- The student employee must be enrolled at the Penn State University as a full time student and be scheduled to work an average of fifteen (15) hours per week for the program period at Penn State Hospitality Services after which the employee is eligible for the “Student Employee Book Loan Program” for the following semester, as long as he/she remains an employees in good standing as defined in general by the Penn State Hospitality Services Orientation Guide and specifically by the guidelines of this agreement between the manager and employee on the program expectations. Eligibility in this program ceases immediately with termination of employment for any reason whatsoever. Books must then be returned at once.
- The books that are “on loan” must be returned in the same condition as when the student received them or the student will be charged accordingly. There will not be any option to buy the books through the program. Books must be returned to the Penn State Bookstore by the last day of final exam week of the same semester.
- The Book Loan Program is only available for Spring and Fall semesters. To qualify for Spring semester, students must be enrolled in the program no later than 2nd Friday in September. For Fall semester eligibility a student must be signed up by 2nd Friday in February. Summer sessions are not applicable.
- The wage payroll student employee must attend the mandatory Book Loan orientation in order to qualify for eligibility.
RETURN POLICY
- All books must be returned no later than the last day of final exams for the semester. All books must be returned. There is no option to buy these books. Employees not returning their books by the last day of final exams will not be eligible for any future Book Loan Programs. Penn State Hospitality Services will bill the employee for any books not returned. Failure to pay for books not returned will result in your paycheck being held and holds placed on registration, transcripts and/or diplomas.
- Student employees will return books to the Administrative Office of the Penn State Bookstore by the last day of finals for the current semester.
- The Administrative employees will record the date, and condition in which the books were returned.
- Books are to be returned in the same condition as they were received and then there will be NO CHARGE. But, if book(s) are in unsatisfactory condition the student must pay the full amount paid by Penn State Hospitality Services.
We believe that the "hospitality industry" truly draws the friendliest, most outgoing people to our properties. Hospitality may be hard work, but it's also a lot of fun!
Training is the cornerstone of providing outstanding guest service and personal satisfaction with one's professional goals. At Penn State Hospitality Services, training is approached through a multi-faceted approach. First, new hires attend an introductory orientation session to complete paperwork and receive an overview of employment policies. Since we encourage new hires to use this session to determine if the hospitality industry is, in fact, the right fit for them, this session is unpaid.
Next comes departmental training. Based on the department, training may take place over a period of hours, days or weeks. Regular training short courses are also offered within the departments.
All new hires participate in a mandatory guest service program called "Guest*Pride." This program takes approximately six hours, comprising either one evening or one day on the weekend. During class, participants are offered the opportunity to expand their guest service knowledge and expertise. Topics cover Image and Attitude - areas often taken for granted but that make a tremendous impact on our guests' perceptions of us! We also cover five steps to building relationships that last - RAPPORT, DISCOVERY, ANTICIPATE, SOLUTION and ACT.
A variety of other professional development opportunities are offered throughout the year. This includes in-house offerings such as safety training (First Aid, CPR and AED), diversity training, sexual harassment awareness training, a comprehensive new manager/supervisor training program and much more! We also regularly publicize and support staff attending professional development opportunities through Penn State's Human Resources Development Center.
We believe that our employees are our greatest "Human Capital." Therefore, we believe in providing opportunities for advancement to those who demonstrate the dedication, energy and skills required to succeed in this industry. Additionally, we encourage staff to participate in certification programs related to their field of interest, with a focus on those offered through The American Hotel & Lodging Association's Educational Institute.
